Governor Hochul grants Warren County home repair assistance

Warren County has been included in a list of counties eligible for state-funded home repair assistance for those impacted by severe storms and flooding that occurred across the state in July and August.

The storm that blew in Tuesday evening July 16 at about 5 p.m. brought strong, destructive wind that took out power to about 20,000 customers throughout Warren and Washington counties.

“After extreme weather events caused major damage across New York State, we are providing emergency assistance for impacted residents to make necessary repairs to ensure their homes are safe and habitable,” said New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in a statement.

Funding up to $50,000 may be used for necessary emergency housing repairs with grants available on a first come, first served basis until funds are exhausted. Funds are available to eligible homeowners for their primary residence where flood or insurance coverage or other forms of disaster recovery funds are not sufficient to return the home to a safe and habitable condition, Gov. Hochul’s office said in a press release.

Applications are now available for income-eligible homeowners in need of assistance and will be accepted until Oct. 7, Hochul announced this week.

“My administration remains committed to assisting homeowners affected by these storms so they can continue to recover from these devastating events,” Hochul said.

“We thank New York State for making this funding available to our residents and those of neighboring counties,” said Kevin Geraghty, Chair of the Warren County Board of Supervisors.

Geraghty is the town supervisor for Warrensburg, one of the towns hit the hardest on July 16 when a tornado touched down.

“Many residents across Warren County suffered damage to their homes during the tornadoes and high winds on July 16, and this money should help them recover from the financial hardship these storms caused,” Geraghty said in a statement.

“We urge those who had their homes damaged by these storms to go to the New York State website to see if they are eligible for funding,” Geraghty added.

The funding program will be administered by Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) and serve the following counties that were impacted by severe storms from July 10 through July 16: Chautauqua, Madison, Erie, Oneida, Essex, Saratoga, Lewis, and Warren.

“As New Yorkers continue to recover from the damage inflicted by this summer’s storms, we stand ready to assist eligible homeowners who are trying to make their homes safe and habitable,” HRC Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said in a statement.
