Habitat for Humanity expands Helene housing recovery efforts | News

Transylvania Habitat for Humanity announced the addition of Morgan Monshaugen as the new construction supervisor for critical home repairs, a role made possible through funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation.

Monshaugen will oversee essential home repairs exclusively for Transylvania County residents whose homes were severely impacted by Hurricane Helene, furthering Habitat’s commitment to helping community members rebuild and recover, according to a news release.

“Welcoming Morgan to our team is a critical step in our mission to serve the residents of Transylvania County, many of whom are still struggling after the hurricane,” said Angie Hunter, executive director of Transylvania Habitat for Humanity. “Thanks to the support from Golden LEAF, we’re better equipped to address the urgent housing needs in our community, particularly for those who are still working to recover.”

The Golden LEAF Foundation (Long-Term Economic Advancement Foundation) is a North Carolina-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering economic growth and resilience in the state’s rural and economically distressed communities.

Since its founding in 1999, Golden LEAF has strategically invested in initiatives that promote job creation, workforce development, agriculture and disaster recovery efforts.

“Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of our state,” said Golden LEAF President and Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton. “Golden LEAF is making resources available to organizations to support immediate relief for individuals and families including home repair, addressing unmet needs, and helping transition out of temporary housing programs.”

Through this funding, Transylvania Habitat can expand its home repair program, ensuring that more Hurricane Helene survivors have access to safe, stable housing.

Monshaugen brings three decades of experience in construction, specializing in new home builds, remodeling and critical home repairs.

He previously served as home repair program manager for Henderson County Habitat for Humanity and has a deep personal connection to the work.

“Growing up, I watched my grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ homes fall into disrepair,” Monshaugen said. “Helping people get the critical repairs they need to remain in their homes is something I’m truly passionate about.”

“There is still so much work to do to help our neighbors recover from this disaster,” said Hunter. “This funding couldn’t have come at a better time, and we are grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact for survivors in their time of need.”
