Johnson County warns residents of home repair scammers

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office is warning of home repair and insurance scammers following Wednesday’s storm. To avoid getting scammed, they recommend residents make direct contact with their insurance providers regarding damage to their homes and not give any personal information to people attempting to sell services door to door. They also recommend homeowners use reputable local businesses for home repairs rather than out of state vendors. Cars that are unmarked or have out of state tags often indicate people who travel to areas with damage, collect money for repairs, and then leave before making any fixes. Roofing contractors are required to register in the state of Kansas and should be able to provide proof of registration to homeowners. If they can’t, the DA’s office recommends taking your business elsewhere. Sergio Flores is the owner of True Grit Roofing in Olathe. He said homeowners should do their due diligence when choosing who they want to make repairs to their home to make sure they are choosing a reputable company. “Please, please, please be very careful who you hire,” he said. “Watch out for high-pressure, slick-talking guys out there. They’re super sweet, but you want to look out for yourself. Do your due diligence. Buy yourself some time. Give yourself a couple days to think about it, look it over, and really make the most informed decision.”Residents can contact the Johnson County District Attorney’s Consumer Hotline at 913-715-3003 with any questions or to report scams in their neighborhoods.
